WHAT IS SFLTC?
The SFLTC is a five-day leadership workshop for high school student government leaders that runs simultaneously with Camp Eagle Advanced Leadership Training Camp. Student leaders who attend this workshop will be given an opportunity to participate in a variety of leadership development activities that are conducted in both small and large groups.

ABOUT US
During the summer of 1967, Plantation High School became the first school in Broward County to send a delegation to the Summer Leadership Workshop sponsored by the Florida Association of Student Councils (FASC). Word spread among students and advisors that attendance at a summer leadership camp was extremely beneficial in developing student leaders. By the summer of 1991, the FASC was sponsoring two such camps.
During the 1991-1992 school year, the Student Activities Liaison from the Department of Athletics & Student Activities of the School Board of Broward County petitioned the FASC to open a summer leadership camp in South Florida. The request was denied. The Student Activities Liaison asked for the School Board’s support in establishing a leadership camp in the Broward/Palm Beach area and received their support and endorsement.

In the summer of 1992, the first South Florida Leadership Training Camp (SFLTC) was held at Florida Atlantic University hosting approximately 130 rising student leaders. The camp moved to Nova Southeastern University (NSU) in Davie for the summer of 1993. The number of delegates attending SFLTC continued to grow each year hosting over 200 delegates that year and every year thereafter.

In 1998, the camp staff introduced a separate advanced curriculum for returning student delegates, and in 2012 the Camp Eagle Advance Leadership Training (CEALT) was launched as an entirely separate camp. The following year (2013) CEALT was held at the same time as SFLTC with delegates from both camps having only limited contact during the week. SFLTC and CEALT continue to be held at NSU simultaneously, except for 2020 and 2021, when they were conducted virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
As SFLTC enters its 32nd year, over 7,500 student leaders from throughout the state have benefited from the leadership training programs offered at this camp. As one of the few remaining camps of this type in the nation, our camp provides delegates the opportunity to enhance and implement the soft skills employers most want—organization, creativity, communication, problem-solving, and time management—to list a few. Like physical fitness, learning to lead requires its own program and support team. At SFLTC, we help student leaders sharpen their leadership skills and teach them the importance of building relationships, cultivating critical thinking skills, and maintaining a growth mindset.
Our senior staff consists of educators who have been or who are currently student activities advisors in Florida high schools and serve on the staff of numerous leadership workshops and have experience in leadership development. Our junior counselor staff consists of former campers who are now attending college and who have applied to be a part of the SFLTC staff. Junior counselors range from recently graduated high school seniors to graduate-level college students.
According to a study published in the Journal of Adolescent Research, students who participate in at least one co-curricular activity each year are 70% more likely to go to college and that participation in activities has the greatest impact on “at-risk” students. With a large percentage of a school’s student body being non-athletes, clubs like student government, debate, and honor society take on a more important role. Participation in school activities increases students' standardized test scores, GPAs, graduation rates, college acceptance rates, and college success rates. Our camp provides delegates with innovative ways to implement their leadership skills and fosters their curiosity about the world and their role in it. The element that successful student activity organizations have in common is that they must have good leaders. The South Florida Leadership Training Camps have a proven history of successfully molding young people into outstanding leaders.
